The Vachetta Leather on your Louis Vuitton Bag

What is Vachetta Leather?

Vachetta is a marketing term created by retailers to describe what is called Veg Tanned leather by tanneries across the globe.

It is an artisan leather that is tanned with all organic materials and once tanned, it is left unsealed. The fact that it is not sealed is what makes the huge difference.  Most leather on the market is sealed and therefore you can use the normal cleaning and conditioning products on the market, but unsealed leather means anything that touches the leather, sinks into the leather fibers.

Many things can sink into the fibers, the wrong cleaner and conditioner, hand oils, water, food, dirt and debris. Basically, there is no barrier to protect the leather.

This is both good and bad.  The positive side is that the leather is able to develop a rich darkening color that serves as a record for every experience you've had with your bag. The negative side is that the handles can turn dark and water stains look unsightly.

We can not emphasize the harm caused to LV Vachetta Leather by using the wrong products on it. If a product is not made for Vachetta/Veg Tanned leather, then using it will damage the leather.  Normally you'd think, oh well, it just won't work, but in this case it actually causes terrible damage and will dry out the fibers and speed up the aging on your leather, causing dryness and cracking.

This same concept holds true for using BABY WIPES, MAGIC ERASER, CADILLAC or APPLE products, and water.

There are tons of videos on YouTube with women showing how great the items listed above work.  The reason they appear to work temporarily is because they actually remove the top layer of the leather, so for a short time, it may look like they helped. Unfortunately, not very long after, that top layer will re appear only now the underlying fibers are damaged. This damage leads to dryness and cracking and quite literally turns your leather to rawhide.

We do have a proprietary process available to reverse this damage when a bag qualifies as a candidate. We have a meter to measure the amount of moisture left in the leather and if there is at least 20% moisture left and the leather hasn't cracked yet, we can often remove all the damage by lifting to the surface and then taking it out.  It is a very timely process akin to a chemistry lab, but it works and turns back the clock on the life of your leather.  We studied extensively with a master leather chemist to be able to do this.  We are not aware of any other companies that can REMOVE WATER STAINS. So we are proud to offer this.

Care and Maintenance of your Vachetta Leather

CARE

1) Clean and condition the Vachetta leather every single month. For the money you invested in your bag, it is worth it for you to add to your calendar a reminder to do this monthly.

2) Never ever use MAGIC ERASER, BABY WIPES, WATER or expensive leather products for sealed leather like CADILLAC  or APPLE, these are great products when used on sealed leather only.

3) We have a service whereby we can apply a temporary, breathable Vachetta leather sealant to the leather on your bag.  It lasts around a year, and gives great protection against water stains, darkening from hand oils and more.

STORAGE & USE

We highly recommend that you use a purse organizer / shaper. Bags can lose their shape and purse linings get dirty.  Both of these things will reduce the value of your Louis Vuitton bag if you choose to sell it in the future.  Plus is will stay looking great for your own enjoyment if you utilize a purse organizer and liner.

Such a small inexpensive investments can do so much to keep your LV bag in great condition.  Using a purse hook is such an easy thing to do and goes such a long way in maintaining the health of your LV bag. Corners are the most common repair issue we see and most of this damage comes from women putting their bags on the floor when they eat out.  Besides being bad for your bag, there are so many germs on the floor!  Keep your bag clean, close and safe, just use a purse hook.  To see our PURSE HOOK ACCESSORIES, which are customizable with an initial, click here.
